Yadan National Geological Park (commonly known as "Devil City") is located about 180 km northwest of Dunhuang City. It is one of the largest and most typical yadan landform groups in China. The word "yadan" originates from the Uyghur language, meaning "steep hills," and refers to a special type of wind-eroded landform.
The yadan landforms were shaped over millions of years by persistent winds eroding the soft sandy rock layers. Tens of thousands of yadan mounds are scattered here in various shapes — some resembling castles and palaces, others like birds and beasts, some like fleets setting sail — in endless forms that leave visitors in awe. When strong winds sweep through the mounds, they produce eerie, howling sounds, giving rise to the name "Devil City."
Scenic spots within the park such as "Golden Lion Welcome," "Pyramid," "Peacock Looking Back," and "Western Sea Fleet" are remarkably lifelike — masterpieces of nature's extraordinary craftsmanship. At sunset, the yadan formations are bathed in golden-red hues with interplay of light and shadow, as if standing on the surface of an alien planet — a paradise for photography enthusiasts. Films such as "Hero" and "Flying Swords of Dragon Gate" were shot here.

Tickets: Entrance + shuttle bus 120 yuan per person (includes Yumen Pass combined ticket).
Opening Hours: Open all day. Sunrise or sunset visits are recommended for the most beautiful lighting.
Transportation: About 180 km from Dunhuang city center, approximately 2.5 hours by car. Private car or group tour recommended.
Visitor Guidelines: The Yadan area has intense sunlight and significant wind-blown sand. Sunscreen and wind/sand protection are essential. Bring plenty of drinking water.
